Ethiopian Airlines is 100% owned by the Ethiopian government based at Bole International Airport. EAL was founded on 21.12.1945 when Emperor Haile Selassie I asked the United States, the United Kingdom and France to assist him with establishing an airline as part of his modernisation attempt. The first flight was on 8.4.1946 to Cairo via Asmara in Douglas C-47 Skytrain and international in 1951.

Today EAL flies to more African destinations than anyone else. With 113 passenger destinations — 19 domestic and 35 freighter, airline is constantly expanding its network of destinations. EAL has been a member of Star Alliance since 2011 providing to customers stronger connectivity and wider range of services between Europe and Africa. The EAL fleet consists: Airbus (A350-900), Boeing (737–700; 737–800; 777-200LR; 777-300ER; 787–8), Bombardier Dash 8 Q400 and cargo fleet Boeing (757-200PCF; 777F).

EAL is the fastest-growing company in the industry and one of the largest on the African continent. Airline received 21 awards during 2015 and was ranked 6th among the 22 most dependable airlines around the world.
