Why visit South America?

South America settled among Caribbean, the South Pacific and the South Atlantic Oceans. Scientist confirmed that South America use to be joined with Africa making a part of supercontinent Pangaea. It began to break apart about 225 million years ago. First evidence of human life in South America goes back to 9000BC. One of the first civilisations on the continent was in Peru. In the late 15th century South America was colonised mainly by Spanish, Portuguese as well as Dutch, British and French. Peaceful independence and withdrawal of colonial forces became common in the second half of the 20th century. Because of architectural and natural astonishments, historical artefacts, vast range of foods and culture, breath-taking landscapes, energetic and bright-coloured cities, tourism today is a significant source of income for many South American countries engaging millions of tourists every year.

South American cuisine has many influences: Native American, African, Spanish, and Italian. The food products depend on the specific regions. Cuisine can be divided in three groups: 1) Andes – include corn, potatoes, other tubers, meat, various stews and soups. 2) Tropical – main ingredients are guava, pineapple, papaya, mango, banana, elderberry potatoes, sweet potatoes, cassava, meat, fish, rice, corn, wheat and beans; 3) Pampas – most of Italian and German influences - pasta and polenta.
